From February 27 – March 3, 2023, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) International Regulatory Development Partnership (IRDP) held a 5-day topical workshop for the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA). The workshop was held in Accra, Ghana and focused on how to identify and assess the potential environmental impacts of a nuclear power plant. The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority and the Ghana Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) helped to organize the event, which was hosted by the Ghana NRA.
The workshop included technical presentations, facilitated discussions and interactive scenario exercises by subject matter experts Mr. Peyton Doub from NRC and Mr. Richard Emch from NRC’s contractor, Advanced Systems Technology and Management, Inc. (AdSTM). Participants from FNRBA Member States included Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia.
The workshop entailed significant discussions by all participants that centered around key technical topics and methods for developing an environmental impact statement for use in evaluating a proposed site.
