Virtual Topical Workshop for Poland: "NRC Lessons-Learned for New Reactors"

December 18th, 2020 —

From December 16-17, 2020, the NRC International Regulatory Development Partnership (IRDP) conducted a virtual workshop for the Polish nuclear regulator, the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA). The focus of the workshop was on NRC lessons learned for new reactor licensing and inspection.

On the first day, the NRC IRDP presented key quality assurance lessons learned gained from challenges encountered in the early days of nuclear power plant construction in the United States. The NRC’s lessons-learned from license application and environmental reviews over the past decade were also presented. On the following day, the NRC IRDP presented a detailed lesson learned of the construction and vendor inspection areas followed by applicant practices and the VC Summer Nuclear Power Plant construction project. Throughout the workshop, the NRC staff in the Offices of International Programs, Nuclear Reactor Regulation, and Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, as well as the NRC’s contractor (AdSTM) addressed PAA’s questions. In January 2021, a planning meeting will be held to discuss the timing and scope of workshops in the upcoming year.
