November 6th, 2020 —

On November 3-5, 2020, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s International Regulatory Development Partnership (IRDP) conducted a workshop on “Nuclear Power Plant Regulatory Oversight” for the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA). The workshop provided an overview of several important topics aimed at enhancing the regulatory infrastructure needed to review an application for and oversee construction and operation of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). During the workshop, the IRDP instructors Mr. Mel Fields, Mr. Richard Emch and Mr. Mark Tonacci addressed the following topics: Laws, Regulations and Guidance Documents; the NPP licensing process; Site Application Reviews; Construction and Vendor Inspections; Staffing Requirements and Human Resources Development; Schedule and Resource Estimates; Document Control and Public Outreach; and Overview of Small Modular Reactors Technology.

Participation by NNRA during the workshop was exceptional as the participants were highly engaged and posed many insightful questions to help broaden their understanding of the regulatory framework related the review of an NPP license application.
