Between March 8-10, 2011, AdSTM and NRC/OIP developed and staffed an International Regulatory Development Partnership (IRDP) Poster Exhibit at the 2011 Regulatory Information Conference (RIC). Sponsored by the NRC’s Office of International Programs, the IRDP assists countries with emerging nuclear power programs to develop regulatory agencies capable of licensing and regulatory oversight of new reactors. On March 10, 2011, representatives of AdSTM and the US NRC Office of International Programs (OIP) met with Dr. Sharaf, the Director General of the Jordan Nuclear Regulatory Commission (JNRC) to discuss a prioritized action items list developed by JNRC subsequent to the IRDP Nuclear Executive Workshop (NEW) conducted in Amman, Jordan from the January 16-19, 2011. From February 21-25, David Squarer and Mihaela Biro of AdSTM led a Siting Workshop at the BAPETEN offices in Jakarta, Indonesia. Bob Schaaf from NRC/NRO participated and shared NRC perspectives with those in attendance. BAPETEN expects to receive an application for a site license in the 2014. The application will be preceded by a two year site evaluation process which is expected to consider the characteristics of 3 sites now being considered for placing the first nuclear power plant in Indonesia. A Construction Permit Workshop was conducted with VARANS, the nuclear regulator in Vietnam, by Gene Imbro, Weidong He, and Scott Newberry of the AdSTM staff from February 14-18, 2011. Mark Lesser, NRC Region 2 participated as well. The first day of the workshop focused on Licensing Process and Review Methodology. The remainder of the workshop covered the major elements of the CP review. A Nuclear Executive Workshop was held in Amman, Jordan for the staff and leadership of the Jordanian Nuclear Regulatory Commission (JNRC) from January 16 – 19, 2011. The purpose of the workshop was to provide interactive training on reactor regulation, the organization of a regulatory agency, teamwork among the nuclear organizations, strategies for developing regulatory structures, and the staffing/training activities necessary to support the regulatory mission.
